My name is Jason and I have been a hunter since the age of six. Most of my time spent in the woods has been in the central Florida region close to home. Three years ago I was hunting the Tide Swamp Big Bend Unit WMA on the west coast of Florida.

I was slow stalking an old logging trail through a very swampy area close to sunset where I had spotted deer crossing before. I had come across some hogs and stopped to check them out when the whole swamp just about went nuts. Something very, very large come crashing through the woods straight at me causing every animal to freak out. I could not believe what I was hearing! It was something huge crashing through the woods and yet I know pigs are not noisy like that.

I draw up my rifle just in case its a wounded deer and then I hear the most terrifying thing ever, large loud feet hitting the ground in such a stride that would double my own.

I could literally feel it in the soft mossy ground as its feet impacted the ground all the while its still coming straight at me. I am really getting worried at this point so the safety comes off on my rifle and just about that time I hear it splash into the water that was in front of me! I guess it was then that the creature saw or caught wind of me because it stopped. I quickly hid behind some palm leaves and a tree, looking hard for what ever it was. Knowing that while I have a deadly, high powered rifle in my hands it is still a bolt action gun and I would only have seconds to fire more that two rounds to drop this massive thing that sounded like king Kong rushing towards me!

I waited for what seemed like ten minutes, but that was probably only two or three, and then I thought to myself that it was getting pretty dark! I took my chance and started to slowly move out of the area carefully back down the trail to the main road, keeping my eyes glued to the area where I had last heard the animal. I got about 20 yards away and to my terror I heard it stalking me again! This time, to my left flank, as I was walking out sort of backward to watch my back. I thought to myself that I had better get a move on so I safetied my gun and started running and did not stop till I ran into another hunter entering the trail from the main road.

I warned the hunter not to go in there and I told him what happened but he wanted to go see what it was with his small shotgun and even tried to talk me into going back.

I said, “…well sorry old man but your on your own…” and I ran down the road back to my brother's truck.

My brother and I left within minutes as I told him about my encounter as we drove along in his truck. I made him swore that he would never go back to that area without me and a large group of people for safety.

To this day not one person that I know has been back in there because they know that I don't make up stories like that.

I have always wanted to go back some day to see if I can find any evidence of it, say a footprint or even get a picture of it but I sure am not going there by myself and well I just had other things to do! If your team ever wants me to show you the place where I had my encounter I would love to show you. It’s a perfect place for them to hide because its very hard for even the most die hard of hunters to get to. Many areas of the land are difficult to travel, due to water.

We would need to make sure its open or get permission from the Florida wildlife commission to trek around during the closed times. I'm sure the local game wardens have some stories to share and they may even be interested in a study like you all do.
