The Apache Nation

August 2006

The Apache Nation

In early August of 2006, the Searching for Bigfoot team, led by Tom Biscardi, came back to the White Mountain Apache Reservation, in Whiteriver Arizona. We met with our good friends, Collette Altaha and A.K. Riley. Collette is the Public Relations Director for the Apache Nation, and A.K. is the Chief of Detectives for the White Mountain Police Department. We came back to do some additional assessments on the multiple sightings being reported on the reservation by local citizens. It was a good feeling to be back with the new good friends we had made on our first visit. It is clear to us that there is something unusual going on in the heart of the reservation. We feel that the unusual amount of sightings and encounters there are a direct result of the recent changes in weather patterns combined with the recent fires that have devastated major portions of the timberlands in the high country surrounding the towns. The combination of these factors seems to have pushed our quarry, closer into the populated areas of the reservation. The White Mountain area is an extremely beautiful area that almost seems out of place for Arizona. It is heavily treed mountains with many meadows, streams, and secluded caves. Like most people, we were not aware of the geological, climatic, and environmental diversity that Arizona has to offer. We though of Arizona as hot and dry and almost entirely desert. How wrong we were.

This is what the team expected most of Arizona to look like…

This is a sample of what we actually found on the White Mountain Apache Reservation

What we found in this beautiful place was a rich, heavily forested area. The area is ecologically diverse, ranging from high desert, thick forests, large meadow lands, grass lands, wild streams and lakes, high snow capped mountains and jagged rock outcroppings. The whole place is teaming with wild life, including excellent wild trout fishing, trophy deer and elk, and all kinds of bird life. Along with the wonderful cultural history, many gift and specialty stores, museums, casino, and hotels make this area of Arizona the perfect place to visit and explore. After our work is done here, this writer will be back to enjoy the natural beauty and abundance of interesting sights. In my opinion, this is the perfect place to vacation with my family.

After settling in, we began meeting and interviewing the many local people who had had sightings and encounters in the recent months. The stories we heard all seemed credible and exciting. It would appear that although there had been sightings and encounters in this area for centuries, the frequency has been increasing dramatically over the past few months. There were so many local experiences that we decided to go to the local radio broadcasting station and set up a base for sharing information with the tribe. Once there, we announced ourselves over the air and invited anyone who was interesting to come on down and share their experiences with us. To our surprise and delight, within minutes, people began to arrive to share with us. The stream of people coming to meet us and share their stories seemed to be never ending. We estimated that, before the evening was over, we had met and talked to over three hundred people! We took the time to talk to as many people as we could. We set up a display of some of our most recent casts and finds and even had open discussions on how to make plaster casts of prints and what to do if there was a sighting. The most common question we received was “are these creatures dangerous?”. Our best answer was that we are unaware of these creatures ever attacking or harming any people without provocation. We suggested that if they see a creature, to back away slowly and leave the area. Once they are at a safe distance, they should call the authorities and report what they had seen. It would be great if they could note the time of day, the date, the description of the creature and what it was doing, the smell if any, the approximate size, color, and any other unusual factors.

Here are just a few of the visitors we were able to meet.

Here is Don Monroe showing the “Hand of Unknown Origin” to some of the local people who came by… Don loved having an audience and was glad to answer questions.

After the broadcast, we headed on out to check some of the more recent areas of sightings. We were fortunate enough to have a news crew from Arizona’s Channel 3 News, (azfamily.com), lead by Scott Davis, join us on our field study. We began by going to meet the Grimes family. Richard and Marjorie Grimes, along with several of their neighbors had reported sightings right near their homes. We felt it would be wise to go out to their neighborhood and do a search. Our plan was to search the area and set up some trip cameras to leave overnight. We began our search about 10pm using flashlights and night vision equipment. We were not able to find any obvious signs in the area, but we did find and collect some hair samples from places that would be too high for dogs and horses that also frequent that area. It was so close to local homes, that we could not complete as thorough of a search as we normally are able to perform, but we did complete a good overview of the area. After our search and interviews with the neighbors, it was around midnight. Marjorie slipped away and cooked a home cooked meal for the entire crew! This was just another example of the openness and kindness the entire Apache Nation had shown to us. We are so grateful to our hosts for the wonderful hospitality shown to us and we can’t wait to go back again for more investigations.

Our hostess, Majorie Grimes

Our team is preparing to leave the Apache Nation for a short while, but we will be back! We have just received a call from Oklahoma about a recent sighting! We are off to see what might be there… Until we can share more events with you, we are out Searching for Bigfoot, and bringing what we find back to you!
