Third Expedition From Coast to Coast Since January of 2006

Clarence New York - June 2006

The first week of June, 2006, we began our third trip across the United States so far this year. We began our trip by heading to Clarence, New York. The Searching for Bigfoot team had found an article in the news about a man in New York who had photographed some strange creature on his 100 acre ranch in Clarence, New York. We saw the photos and on first inspection found them to be a little questionable. However, we know from experience, that our subject is what it is and not what most people expect it to be. In other words, the image of Bigfoot in most people’s mind’s eye is one thing, but the actual creature is something else.

We have heard of many stories of hunters having ample opportunity to shoot this creature, not being able to pull the trigger because it looked so much like a human in a suit. The pictures in the article we saw appeared, at first glance, to be just that, a man in a suite. However, we would not be doing our jobs unless we did some primary investigation before making up our minds.

Tom Biscardi decided to call the gentleman who took the photos and get his side of the story. Tom followed up and made the call to Mr. Hans Mobius. What he discovered was a very credible and articulate man. Mr. Mobius had no alternative motives and simply photographed what he saw. As a matter of fact, he didn’t even share his photos with anyone outside of his family. As it turned out, his daughter felt it might be a benefit to science to share the photos with the world, so she sent them off to the local news paper. Tom asked some basic questions about the area and the situation that lead up to the photos. The team got together and discussed the situation in detail and decided that although there was some doubt about the photos, there was no doubt about the integrity and credibility of the man who took them. We knew we could not find the real answers by sitting at our desks and looking at newspaper photos. The only way to really understand what had happened was to drive the 3,800 miles and see for ourselves. The decision was made to go to the scene and do a formal investigation.

What we discovered was, in my belief, one of the most astonishing and credible sightings of my career! What follows is an overview of our investigation. I will jump just a little out of the sequence of events to show something amazing about those first photographs. I will show you the original three photos taken by Mr. Mobius, and then I will show you a photo that I took to help me understand what we might have seen in the original photos. I began by putting Mr. Mobius’ “John Deer Gator” back in his field in a spot as close to the original area of the original photos as possible. Next I had a member of our team, Tim McMillen , stand about two feet away from the “Gator” near were we suspect the creature was spotted. Tim McMillen is 5’8” tall. Take a look at how he compares to the picture of the creature in the photos!

These are the three original photos as they appeared in the newspaper.

This is one of those pictures with an insert of Tim McMillen standing by the same “Gator” If our creature is a man in a suite…. He is an awfully big man!!!

Now that I have your attention, I will go back and share our findings with you in more detail. We began by checking out the area for the basics. We found more than ample cover, food, water, and general habitat to support our subject for a time while he/she travels through this area on its annual migration route. We suspect that an animal could hold up here for several weeks while resting and replenishing strength by eating the plentiful food supplies near by. The following photos will give you a better idea of the surrounding area and plentiful cover available.

These two photos indicate the cover available. The first shows the tree line in the back of the property that extends for miles. The second shows a small pond in the forest that sits just behind the clump of trees in the picture that shows the creature. As you can see, the forest is quite dense and offers good cover for. It has water and food items to spare.

Walking the property, we also found what appeared to be a nest where some large creature had been resting. We cannot be sure that it was the creature that stayed there. We did not find any hair samples, foot prints, or unusual odors present when we checked. However, we could not identify it as a nest for any other animal either. Normally, we would see signs of deer, or tracks of animals leading in or out, but not at this site.

We made the decision to come back at night, when we know these creatures are most active. We set up trip cameras in four locations around the clump of trees in the middle of the field where the original photos were taken and nest was found. We baited the area near the cameras with sardines and glow sticks. The sardines are a powerful scent attractant, and the glow sticks provide an irresistible curiosity item for the creatures. We left and went back to the Motel while we waited for darkness.

Back at the Motel, we found a small group of local people who had seen our truck and gathered around our rooms. They were curious about what we were doing. A few of the people there asked if they could go out with us that evening and watch what we did and see if they might see anything. We went ahead and made arrangements to allow them to follow us out that evening along with some of the local news media. Everyone agreed to our “ground rules” so that they did not interfere with our investigation, but they could still participate and observe everything we did. They would be able to see what we saw, hear what we heard, and sense all that we sensed, as it happened and as we experience it! About 10pm, we met at the site. The crew set about setting a camp fire and deploying out equipment. We ignited the glow sticks, set up the bionic ear, and prepared the recordings so we could do some calling. We moved our team out to strategic areas and got ready. Once we were set up, we gave the instructions to sit quietly for about 20 minutes to allow the area to settle back down.

Once the insects and animals in the area returned to their normal routines, we began sending out our recorded calls to see if we might get a reply. We cycled our recordings several times and waited in silence… but no replies. We scanned the area with our thermal indicators and night scopes, but saw nothing. After a couple of hours with nothing happening, Tom Biscardi suggested we do some “tree knocking”. “Tree Knocking” is a technique that has been used for many years to communicate with these animals. It is believed that they communicate their location with each other, by taking tree limbs and beating on trees. Tom took a small hatchet and began to beat on a tree with the flat of the axe head. Within minutes, we heard a faint reply off in the woods behind the meadow. We again scanned the area with our thermal indicators and this time we picked up heat sources! The first sources we picked up were found by one of our guests and soon verified by some of our team members. We continued the “tree knocking” and what ever was back in those woods continued to answer us. If we knocked five or six times, it would answer with one or two knocks, but if we knocked one or two times, it would answer with three or four knocks. After a short time, if we didn’t knock often enough, it would knock first and wait for an answer. What ever it was seemed to be playing back and forth with us. We began taking turns scanning the area were the thermal indicators indicated heat source, with the more sophisticated thermal imager. The thermal imager, or TI, electronically converts any heat source into an image similar to a photo image. Tom passed the TI around so everyone could get a chance to search the area where we could hear the knocking.

Eventually, Todd Baily, a cameraman that was along with us filming our work, began to explain he saw something. He began by quietly stating that he saw a bright spot at the base of a tree. It seemed to be moving a little bit… suddenly, his voice got much more excited... he began to yell, “Oh my God... it just stood up! Now it is rocking back and forth… Oh my God... It’s huge... now it is running back into the woods!”

After prying the TI away from Todd, Tom Biscardi took a look. Even after 34 plus years of searching for this creature, and 5 actual sightings, Tom just kept yelling, “Look at this! Look at this! Oh my God there it is! Look how fast it’s is moving! Look at this!” We finally convinced Tom that we could not “look at this” unless he would relinquish the TI, so Tom handed the TI to anyone who wanted to look. At least five different people were able to see the image before we were done!

We were all so excited that we failed to notice the weather. The temperature had dropped to between the low 40’s and high 30’s and it was beginning to rain. We followed the image until it ran out into the woods so far we could no longer see it. We tried more tree knocking, but it no longer answered. Our camp fire was burned out and we were all cold and damp. The area the creature was spotted was on the other side of an electric fence on someone else’s property. We attempted to find that person so we could ask permission to follow what ever we had seen, but we were unable. The owner of the property told us he didn’t want anything to do with this subject and asked us to stay off his property. Reluctantly, we had to respect his wishes and call it a night. It was about 3 am, cold, and wet out. We decided to come back in the morning and pick up our trip cameras and search the area in the day light for any signs of prints or other activity.

We returned the next morning to check our cameras and inspect the area. We found that the cameras appeared to have been tampered with prior to our return! We were unable to retrieve all of the photos, but the ones that we could get, showed nothing unusual. However, much more significantly, one of the spent glow sticks was gone. It had fallen, we did a thorough search for it and it was not to be found. Tom recalled a similar incident years before when he had set out six glow sticks and only found four the next morning. After an exhausting search, they found one and ½ sticks in a lair the following day. That incident lead to one of Tom’s actual sightings! We continued to search the area for additional signs of activity, but found nothing unusual. We cleaned up the area and went back to Mr. Mobius’ home. Mr. Mobuis told us he saw a couple of men out in the area earlier that morning walking around the cameras. He recognized one of the men as a person that was out with us the night before, but asked them to leave the property.

We prepared to come back again that evening to do some more “tree knocking”. We also purchased some additional equipment so that we could try to record images from our TI onto an Ipod. We have never attempted this before, but we were told it was possible. We came back around 10 pm and tried to repeat the activities of the night before. Unfortunately, to no avail. We did get a faint answer from the “tree knocking”, but is was almost impossible to hear and it was from a great distance. What ever was doing it, had moved off and was no longer in our vicinity.

This was the most exciting and mind boggling events of my short career. I am so fortunate to have been able to “leap frog” my experiences off of the work of the earlier pioneers in this field. Since January of this year, I have heard something reply to our recorded calls. I have seen images on the TI and I have had something reply to my “tree knocking”. All of these things are very rare and have only been experienced by a hand full of experts. To have them all happen in such a short span of time is a good indication that we are getting very close to our goal! Until we get there, we will continue to be Searching for Bigfoot… for you!
