Why We Can’t Forget TexasOn this trip, following our initial stop in Arizona, we stopped by Paris Texas once again. After all, we were only a little over a thousand miles away and we just can’t seem to get enough of this site anyway! Our plan was to stop by and speak to some of the officials in the area and arrange permission to explore adjacent areas to the “public” parks. However, while we were there, we could not resist going back to the areas we had already seen that were so productive for us. As we soon found out, there were many new signs that our friend was still there and doing very well. We found many new tracks and signs of feeding.
We set up a base camp and made arrangements to monitor the area through the night. To our surprise, late that evening, a team of “researchers” from another Texas based group came through the area we were monitoring. We had bionic ears and night vision equipment set up to monitor the area. The “other researchers” casually walked right through our area, totally unaware that there was a six man team monitoring their actions. They walked directly through the research area and missed stepping on several prints by just inches. We could hear them talking as they decided to move to another area because they were not finding anything??? Fortunately, they didn’t cause too much damage and we were able to continue our work after they left. The next morning, we brought the prints back to our motel for a group picture and called the local Game Warden, Darla Barr, so we could discuss what we might need to do to arrange additional studies. As it turned out, Ms. Barr, a nineteen year law enforcement veteran, had specialized in finger print collection and study. After meeting with us, she indicated that she was very skeptical about what we were doing and doubted that we would find anything. She told us that she was on a schedule and only had about twenty minutes to spend with us. We told her what we were trying to do and she, to our surprise, told us where we had been and what we had done while we were there! It seemed that she had been monitoring our activities and was very aware of all activities in her jurisdiction. We were all very impressed with her diligence and professionalism. We began sharing some of the items we had found from the night before, including the casts of the prints we had taken. Normally, after taking casts, we wrap them up and bring them back to the lab for detailed inspection. We photograph them, but the detailed inspection is done in a more controlled setting. We unwrapped a sample of the casts made the night before, and laid them out in front of Ms. Barr. She looked them over carefully, then made a telling statement; “Wow, do you know what you have here?!! There are dermal ridges on these casts…. What you have is from something big that walks on two legs!”. Not yet having had the opportunity to closely examine our casts, we were delighted to have this observation from an expert. After that, our “twenty minute” meeting went on for over three hours! Ms. Barr agreed that she would try to get all of the decision makers together for us so that we could attempt to gather all of the approvals required to move on to our next level of investigation and we are looking forward to meeting again in a couple of weeks.
We will be heading back to Texas in the near future and will hopefully be able to share more rare and incredible finds with you. We found many things in this area that only deepened our curiosity and will draw us back for even more in depth studies. With the help of the people we already have in the area, and the support of the local agencies, we may be able to get even more clues as to the habits and needs of our elusive friend. Perhaps enough to give us the intellectual tools we need to prepare us to capture a creature, study it, classify it, and release it again! Until then, we will continue to be Searching for Bigfoot!
